June 2006

from the animal files

For the last two days, have been waking up to the heartrending cries of my two next door neighbors, approximate ages 5 and 7, calling up and down the street for their lost cat. Whose name is “Daddy.”

Am now pretty sure it is the same two red-tailed hawks I keep seeing at my Place of Employ. And what I thought was a kind of grappling-fight above the parking lot earlier this month was more likely mating prep. It’s a red-tailed hawk romance!

Thanks to those two I re-understand the real point of bell towers, scraggly tops of trees, and chimneys. They are good places to perch and call.
